Dodgers win bid for Korean star Ryu
Club has 30 days to negotiate deal for left-handed pitcher
LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers are the winning bidder for Korean left-handed pitcher Ryu Hyun-Jin, Major League Baseball announced on Saturday.

The Dodgers have an exclusive 30-day window to negotiate a contract with the pitcher and his agent, Scott Boras. If no deal is reached, Ryu would return to the Eagles and could not participate in another positing process until next year.
Presumably, Ryu would satisfy general manager Ned Colletti's expressed desire to add a front-line pitcher to a starting rotation that already includes Clayton Kershaw, Chad Billingsley, Josh Beckett, Aaron Harang, Chris Capuano and Ted Lilly.

The signing of Ryu would allow a trade, most likely of Harang or Capuano, once the team was satisfied that Lilly had recovered from shoulder surgery or Billingsley had avoided Tommy John elbow surgery after suffering a partially torn ligament.
Ryu, a seven-year veteran, was the first player to win the MVP and Rookie of the Year honors in the same season in Korea, when he went 18-6. He averaged 15 wins a season until this year, when the Eagles finished last and he had only nine wins, along with a 2.66 ERA.
The 6-1, 215-pound Ryu is a strikeout pitcher with a fastball in the low-90s with a change-up and slider.
The Dodgers, after nearly a decade of de-emphasizing international players, have re-established their presence in a big way this year, most notably with the $42 million signing of Cuban outfielder Yasiel Puig.

When Dodgers signed Kuroda to a four year deal, he was already 33 and did not have the most impressive numbers in Japan. He was solid in Japan. In the MLB he was solid too and after last years' performance with the Yankees at 37/38, teams are realizing the value of these guys. If Dodgers can sign him long term like 6 years at around 9 million a year (whole deal) that might prove to be a very good move

The Mets need this guy! Although in my opinion he won't be as good as Darvish record-wise, he can completely fill a needed hole in the rotation, maybe 2-5 in the Mets' organization, with Young as a free agent or Pelfrey being non-tendered or Santana going out in 2014 (dumb move in my opinion)! Maybe he can fill the holes of a spot of a shaky minor-leaguer in relief! Or he can be part of another bullpen overhaul--he'll be so good as a reliever on out team! I'm so mad the Mets didn't try to pursue this guy, especially since the money-is-tight excuse can't be used since we released Jason Bay. Another opportunity missed by Sandy Alderson (Mets GM).
메츠도 얘 필요해.. 기록상 봤을 땐 다르빗슈처럼 잘하는 것 같진 않지만.. 적어도 메츠의 부족함을 채울 수 있을꺼야.. FA된 Young이나, Pelfrey나, 2014년에 떠나는 Santana나. 뭐 마이너리그에 불안한 중계정도는 메꿀 수 있겠다. 아니면 패전투수나. 메츠가 얘 안사려고 했는지 이해가 안가네. Jason Bay를 푼 이상 돈이 없는 것도 아니고.. Sandy Alderson(메츠 구단주)가 또 하나 놓쳤구만.

I am just stating my humble and honest opinion, but I don't think Ryu will be as good as Darvish, I mean he can probably be 4-5 in the rotation. I don't think a pitcher with a 2.66 ERA in Korea can be better than a pitcher who had a sub-2.00 ERA in Japan for 5 straight years. That said, I wish him good luck.

I don't understand the durability questions about him... He pitched 200+ innings twice in a league with 133 games only He's almost always around 190 innings/year except in 2008 and 2011. If he adjusts well, he'll be a perfect 3-to-5-spot inning eater in any MLB rotation. His numbers will decrease a lot of course but Korean players can hit. No power but they can hit. Plus he brings money cuz Korean will be crazy about him and his new team.
Of course, if he ends up signing somewhere this year...

seems to have control too, that being said his delivery is very violent and he twist his arm
a lot which is going lead to an elbow injury and maybe his shoulder too. Guys that
dont get injured have a very smooth delivery that looks effortless.
하나만 말하자면 얘는 공 끝도 아주 지저분하고 제구도 잘 되는 좋은 투수야. 근데 팔도 많이 틀고 폼

After seeing some comments, I decided to chip in cuz there are some things to be considered when talking about Ryu. He has been the BEST pitcher in Korea, period. However, his numbers may fool you to think that he is a mediocre pitcher with above-average 4-5 pitches. But, obviously that's not true.

His fastball can get up to 95miles with accuracy yet normally around 89-91. He has a nasty circle change up that basically looks like a fastball because of the same windup and release point. His circle change up was proven effective not only in his own league but also in many international competitions. With a little bit of slider here and curve ball there along with his 2-pitch style makes him a "hard-to-guess" pitcher.

직구는 95마일까지 나가고, 보통 89~91마일정도지.. 그리고 얘 서클체인지업이 대박인데 직구랑 똑같은 와인드업이랑 릴리즈포인트에서 떨어져서 구분이 힘들어. 얘 서클 체인지업은 얘 리그에서만 먹히는게 아니고 국제대회에서도 잘 먹혔지. 직구랑 서클체인지업이랑 같이 쓰는 커브랑 슬라이더 때문에 뭘 던질지 예측을 못하지.

어찌됐건 모두가 잘 알겠지만 메이저리그에서 던지는건 완전 달라. 많은 사람들이 류현진의 기록이 그렇게 놀라운 기록도 아니고 메이저리그에서 던지면 기록이 더 안 좋아질거라고.. 근데 우리가 생각해야할 사실은 류현진은 한국팀 중에서도 하위 팀에서 던졌다는거지.. 한화에서 류현진이 9이닝 정도 던져주기를 바랬기 때문에 가끔씩은 몇점씩 실점하면서 맞춰잡는 투구를 했지.. 근데 얘가 진짜 제대로 6이닝 정도 던지면 메이저리그에서도 먹힐거야. 얘가 아놀드 채프먼처럼 파이어볼러는 아니지만... 다양한 구질을 가지고 상대하는 스타일이지.. 메이저리그에서 기록도 그렇게 나쁠 것 같진 않아..

그 누구든 재능이나 능력과 상관없이 다른 리그와 다른 문화에서 뛰는건 어려워. 시차가 바뀌면 제 능력껏 던지지 못할 수도 있지. 류현진이 확실히 재능은 있지만 중요한 것은 얼마나 잘 적응하느냐와 첫 몇게임이 가장 중요하겠지..

Hong-Chih Kuo was an outstanding reliever for the Dodgers from 2008-2010: 180innings,
1.84 ERA & 201 K's during those 3 years. I'd say he was the top performing Korean pitcher so far.
